Prime Sheep 291221

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,332 Prime sheep, comprising of 2,292 prime lambs and 2,040 cast ewes and rams.

A sale average of £127.94 was achieved, up £30 per head on the year, with over 1200 more sheep sold than the corresponding sale last year.

The sale topped at 390ppk for a pen of cracking 39kg Beltex lambs from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, realising £152 per head, purchased by Mr R Vivers, with this consignment averaging 309ppk/£135.63 for 43kg.

Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, sold a run of well turned out Beltex cross lambs to average £142.91/320ppk for 44kg.

The sale topped per head at £163 for Texel cross lambs from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, weighing 47kg, purchased by West Scottish Lamb.

Heavy lambs sold to a much sharper trade than expected earlier in the week, with Suffolks topping at £157 for a pen of 20, weighing 57kg, from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, purchased by Mr J Tucker, with this consignment of 90 averaging £148.70.

Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, sold a run of 57 to average 296ppk/£139.25 for 47kg.

Light lambs achieved some fiery returns with Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm, selling a run of 30 Texel cross Mule lambs to average 297ppk/£101.76 for 34kg.

A marvellous trade was witnessed in the cast ewe ring, with all buyers present and active. The sale topped at £240 for a pen of 3 Texel ewes from Mr H McRae, Huntley, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.

Weight sold exceptionally well with Foley Brothers, Capheaton, selling 36 Suffolk cross Mule ewes to £150 per head and a pen of 9 of the best Northumberland Mules to £136, with this consignment of 125 averaging £138.67.

Horned ewes topped at £104 for a pen of eight Swaledales from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, purchased by Mr N Lomax. A ring full of 24 aged Scotch Blackfaced ewes achieved £120, with other pens up to £103.
