On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 96 OTM Cattle.
A marvellous entry of cast cows was forward to a full ringside of buyers, this ensured a sharper trade right across the board, with the whole sale averaging 136p/kg. The sale topped at 228.5p/kg (£2056.50) for a pure British Blue cow, weighing 900kg from Messrs JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm, selling to Mr Owain Llyr.
Messrs G & JE Bell, Far Broom, sold an outstanding young Limousin cow, weighing 798kg, for 221.5p/kg (£1767.57), also selling to Mr Owain Llyr.
A run of fourteen beef-bred cows from Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, mainly British Blue X Limousin cows averaged a staggering 160.5p/kg (£1221.95), topping at £1574.43 for a ten-year-old cow, selling to Mr D Barker.
A good run of Limousin X cows from Messrs R & EM Smithson, Bloan Farm, averaged £1402.11 (186.5p/kg), topping at £1553.76 (215.5p/kg), purchased by Mr Owain Llyr.
Black & White cows met a much-improved trade, with Messrs Hayton, Penny Hill, selling young beasts to 177.5p/kg (£1111.15), and Messrs Fisher, Yanwath Woodhouse, achieving £1205.65 (171.5p/kg). Older Black & White cows also sold well, with a seven-year-old cow from Messrs Strong, Low Brow, achieving £928.34 (138.5p/kg).
A good show of cast bulls topped at £1545.18 (141.5p/kg) for an Aberdeen Angus, weighing 1092kg.
