Prime Sheep 011221
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,081 prime sheep, comprising of 2,368 prime lambs & 2,713 cast ewes and rams.
A larger show of prime stock was forward on the week with an SQQ average of 294ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 361ppk for a pen of 17 Texel cross Beltex lambs, weighing 41kg from J & HD Langcake, Sandhills, Bassenthwaite, realising £148 per head, purchased by Mr M Bowe, this consignment of lambs averaged £140.77/337ppk for 41kg.
A sale average of £132.60 per head was achieved, up £35.21 on the year. Topping at £175 for a pen of 75kg Rouge tup lambs from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Suffolk cross Mule lambs topped at £174 for a pen of 20, weighing 61kg, from Mr WR Wilson, South View, purchased by Mr J Tucker. This consignment of 45 Texel cross Mule and Suffolk cross Mule lambs averaged £172/286ppk for 60kg.
Heavy Cheviot Mule lambs again showed their popularity, topping at £149 per head for 52kg lambs from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Penrith leads the way again in the cast ewe and ram ring with 11 active buyers ensuring a trade the likes of which has not been seen for a long time. A total of 60 cast ewes sold in excess of £200 per head, topping at £258 from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Texel ewes averaged £170.45 for all 186 sold.
Something you don’t see every day, a run of 29 Texel ewes from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, averaged a staggering £221.89, including a pen of 7 achieving £248 per head, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Numerous pens of ewes were £15-£20 per head up on the week, with a pen of 10 English Mules achieving £138 from Gate Farm, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
East Gate sold a ring full of 23 Scotch Blackfaced ewes to £110 per head, purchased by Mr R Skelton, with this run of 150 averaging £93.44.
