Prime Sheep 241121
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,011 prime sheep, comprising of 2,526 prime lambs & 2,485 cast ewes and rams.
Numbers from all over the UK came forward to ringside of fourteen active buyers, this ensured an SQQ average of 285p/kg, topping at 370p/kg for a pen of 43 Beltex lambs from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, selling to Mr M Bowe. This consignment of fifty-six lambs averaged 291p/kg/£143 per head, this included a pen of 25 Cheviot Mules which realised £143 purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Top consignment average per kilo was 326p/kg/£128.85 for a run of twenty-seven handy weighted 39kg Texel cross Beltex lambs from Messes Lowis, Galloper Park.
An overall sale average of £128.07 was achieved on the week, this up £32 per head on the year and £6 a head on the week. Topping at £163 for a pen of 57kg Texel lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise, selling to West Scottish Lamb. This run of forty-five averaged £155.73/56kg.
Some super pens of Suffolk cross Mule lambs sold exceptionally well, with Mr WR Wilson, South View selling a pen of twenty-four 58kg lambs to total £159 a head, selling to Mr J Tucker. This run of forty-five averaged £155.73/56kg.
Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, had a bonanza with a ring full of thirty-one Suffolk Mule lambs weighing 53kg achieving £151 (285p/kg). This consignment of fifty-five averaged 288p/kg (£149.82).
Mule lambs once again hit some high returns with Mr TJ Bark, Biggar, making the trip down to Penrith with a pen of twenty-one 39kg lambs realising £105 (269p/kg). Heavy lambs from Messrs Fleming and Wilson, Low Mill, weighing 55kg achieved £145, this consignment averaged £135 for 51kgs.
A massive show of cast ewes was forward to a complete ringside of buyers, with numerous pens selling in excess of £200 per head, topping at £228 for a pen of Texel ewes from Town End, selling to Mr J Tucker.
All Texels in the sale averaged £133.55. An overall sale average of £91.81 was achieved this up £10.63 on the week. Heavy ewes regularly sold between £130-£140 per head.
Mule ewes sold exceptionally well, with Backmuir Livestock realising £123 for a pen of thirteen, with several other pens £110 plus.
Horned ewes topped at £118 for a pen of Rough Fell ewes from Mr A Kipling, Hardendale. The better end of Swaledales were getting comfortably over £80 pounds, topping at £86 from Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill. Scotch Blackfaced ewes from Inverness topped at £97 per head for a ring full of twenty.
