Prime Sheep 171121
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers' Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,859 Prime sheep, comprising of 2,234 prime lambs and 2,625 cast ewes and rams.
Another large offering of prime lambs was forward on the week with an SQQ average of 279p/kg being achieved, this was most definitely sharper than last week. The sale topped at 353p/kg (£141) for a pen of fourteen 40kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs J & HD Langcake, Sandhills, Keswick. This run averaged £133.46/320p/kg for 41.5kg.
The whole sale averaged £122.87 this up £27.88 on the year, topping at £169 a head twice, firstly from Mr G Pyman. Park View with a 65kg Texel X tup lamb selling to Mr N Lomax. This consignment averaged £150.25 per head for 56kg. This top price was matched for 64kg Suffolk cross Mules from Messrs Pollock Braithwaite Mill, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Mules were in fashion once again with Messrs Lowis Waterside House selling a pen of twenty-two, weighing 54kg to realise £141, bought by Mr J Tucker. Heavyweight Mules from Messrs Wilson, Undercragg achieved 264p/kg (£124) for 47kg lambs, and Swaledales from the same home sold to £119 for 47kg.
Cast ewes and rams held their value on the week topping at £240 her head for Texel ewes from Holme House, selling to Mr J Tucker. All Texel ewes in the sale averaged £135.74. Plenty of ewes sold in excess of £150, with cast rams even sneaking up to £160 for a Suffolk from Mr PM Smith, Cocklakes.
Mules topped at £130 a head from Mr JJ Hall, Lankaber, Mashams from the same home achieved £124.
Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold Suffolk ewes to a top of £158 for a pair selling to Pak Mecca Meat.
Horned ewes topped at £91 per head for well-fed Swaledales from Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor, selling to Mr Blenkhorn.
