On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 107 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A reduced entry was forward on the fortnight to an increased ring side of buyers, with several going home empty handed and some classes being £50-£60 per head dearer on the week.
The sale topped at £920 for a fourteen-month-old British Blue bullock from Alan Errington, Sockbridge Hall, purchased by Mr J Little.
Four to five-month-old stirks regularly sold over £500, with Messrs Harrison, Penny Hill Park, selling a five-month-old British Blue heifer to £620, closely followed by a pen of three at £610, all purchased by Mr WH Raine. Messrs G & EA Harrison, Mount Clifton sold a pen of three Simmental bulls to £570.
A shortage of calves on milk resulted in some sharp competition, with ten-week-old British Blue bulls achieving £460 from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, purchased by Messrs J & A Wear, Milburn Grange, with this run averaging £431.67.
Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, achieved a sharp trade for three to four-week-old British Blue calves, with bulls regularly over £350, topping at £370.
