On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,928 prime sheep, comprising of 1,687 prime lambs & 2,242 cast ewes and rams.
The demand and trade can only be described as unbelievable for the first week in November. An SQQ average of 277ppk was achieved, 269ppk overall. The sale topped at 359ppk for a pen of 37kg Beltex lambs from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, realising £133 per head, purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Numerous pens of sheep achieved in excess of 300ppk, with Mr L Skelton, Low House Farm, achieving 355ppk/£149 for 42kg purchased by Mr M Bowe. A real run of 44 Beltex cross Lambs from J & HD Langcake, Sandhills, averaged a staggering £134/311ppk for 43kg.
The whole sale averaged £123.03 per head, up £27.60 on the year, topping at £160 for 58kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Messrs Robley, Demesne, sold a run of 41 Suffolk cross Mule lambs to average £142.32/261ppk for 54kg, topping at £147 for a pen of 56kg, purchased by Mr J Tucker. Closely followed at £142 for 55kg Suffolk lambs from Messrs WH & M Sisson & Son, Fenton Farm, this run of 44 averaged £137.98/277ppk for 49.5kg.
Mule lambs took a massive lift with Messrs W & R Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, selling 44kg lambs to £123/257ppk, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
Swaledale tup lambs topped at 238ppk/£107 for 45kg from Messrs M & TF Graham, West Foreshield, purchased by Mr M Helliwell. Lightweight Herdwick lambs from Messrs M & J Potter, Ulcatrow, achieved 235ppk/£80 for 34kg purchased by Mr W Shearer.

A ringside of eleven active buyers in the ewe ring resulted in most ewes being over £10 per head dearer on the week. The sale topped at £240 per head for a pair of Texel ewes from James Winter, Clickham, purchased by Mr J Tucker. The same home sold numerous other pens over £200, with a pen on 11 realising £190. This run of 41 averaged £175.15.
Mules and horned ewes took the largest lift on the week. Mule ewes averaged £96.28 topping at £116 from Riverview. A ring full of 41 English Mules achieved £109. In places horned ewes would be up £15 per head, Scotch Blackfaced ewes topped at £101 from Drumreach Farm, Inverness. Heavy Swaledale ewes were regularly £80 per head plus, with Mr Skelton, Low House Farm, topping at £86 per head, with Herdwicks from the same home realising £84.
Several new vendors were here selling ewes, taking advantage of a full ring of active buyers week in, week out.
