Prime Sheep 131021

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,461 prime sheep, comprising of 2,195 prime lambs & 2,266 cast ewes and rams.

A marvellous number of sheep went through the sale ring today with a great ring of buyers bidding freely for all classes. Trade held very well from start to finish with almost the last man through the ring, Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, averaging 300ppk, topping at 315ppk for a pen of 41kg Beltex lambs, realising £129, purchased by Mr M Bowe, this whole consignment averaged 39kg/£120.

The whole sale averaged £111.64, up £21.80 on the year. Heavy lambs met a phenomenal demand with numerous pens achieving in excess of £140 per head. The sale topped at £170 for strong 80kg Texel cross lambs from Tarn End, purchased by Mr N Lomax.

Messrs TD Hewetson, Scales Hall, sold their first draw of lambs to average £158, topping at £160 for 71kg Texel cross Suffolk lambs, purchased by Mr R Skelton.

Mr W HIrd, Town Head, Wigton, sold a run of Suffolk cross Mule lambs to average £135.50/255ppk for 53kg, topping at 256ppk for a pen of 21, weighing 54kg, achieving £138.

Mule lambs topped at £122 per head from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, for 53kg lambs, purchased by Mr J Tucker. Cheviot Mule lambs achieved £135 for 55kg from Messrs RG Todd, Crosby Hall.

Swaledale wether lambs from Messrs Thompson, East Unthank, achieved a top of 214ppk for 36kg lambs, totalling £77 per head, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Another huge show of cast ewes and rams was forward, although lacking quality and strength. Texel ewes topped at £210 per head from Messrs JW Watson, Whygill Head, Great Asby, purchased by Mr J Tucker. A shortage of Texel ewes was forward with more required next week.

Heavy fat ewes were also in short supply with Messrs G & HR Shields, Tarn House, Kirkby Stephen, selling Bluefaced Leicester ewes to £148. One of many first-time vendors today, Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall, Whitehaven, sold a ring full of English Mules to £107 per head, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Swaledale ewes with strength were good to sell, with plainer ewes just a little harder to cash. Messrs GE Harker, Murton Hall, sold a pen full of 17 to £65 per head, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
Cast rams topped at £158 for a Teeswater from Dancing Gate Farm.
