On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,599 prime
A larger show of prime lambs was forward with an SQQ average of 226ppk being achieved, topping at 293ppk for a pen of 42kg Beltex lambs from Mr P Bousfield, Glaslyn House, realising £123, purchased by Cranstons Quality Butchers, this run of lambs averaged £109.49.
Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park, sold quality once again, averaging 265ppk/£112.78 for 42kg.
Messrs W Gribbon, Waterside Farm, Dumfries, sold a lovely consignment of sweet Beltex cross Texel lambs to average £113.71 for 42kg.
Messrs J & D Langcake, Sandhills, Keswick, sold a run of 73 Texel cross lambs to average £109/262ppk.
Heavy lambs were in great demand, slightly dearer in places than last week, topping at £137 (230ppk) for a pen of 60kg Texel cross lambs from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Suffolk lambs topped at £140 from Messrs Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Mr R Skelton, with this run averaging £129.43 for 58-71kg.
Messrs JL Potter & Sons, Town Head, sold hopper-fed Mule lambs, weighing 49kg to £106/216ppk.
Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, sold a run of heavy lambs weighing 49kg to average £118.67/241ppk.
Another huge show of cast ewes was forward with weights and quality the easiest to sell. The sale topped at £228 a head for a Texel ewe from Adam Wilson, Hardrigg Hall purchased by Mr J Tucker, this run of ewes averaged £189.
Beltex cross ewes topped at £178 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, with this run of 30 averaging £147.13. All Beltex ewes in the sale sold to average £133.71
Heavy fat ewes were in very short supply with Suffolk cross Texel ewes topping at £141 a head from Messrs B & J Taylor, Plumpton Old Hall, selling to Mr J Blenkhorn.
Messrs J M Carruthers and Son, Grassgarth sold a run of Texel cross ewes to average £145.94, topping at £198.
Cast rams sold to a top of £175 for a Dutch Spotted from S Jordon, Low Fauld, Ainstable, with numerous lots achieving £140 plus.
Ewes were forward from as far afield as Devon, Aberdeen and Northern Ireland.
