Rearing Calves & Stirks 200821
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 151 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Another bumper entry of both calves and stirks was forward with trade in places maybe a little easier than previous sales, however quality still sold to phenomenal returns. The sale topped at £830 for an eight-month-old Limousin Bullock from Messrs Folder, Wescoe, purchased by Mr J Townley.
A dairy-bred British Blue bullock achieved a staggering £800 from Messrs W Atkinson & Son, Demesne Farm, Whitehaven.
Young calves achieved a very sharp trade for quality with Messrs J & KA Mclaughlin, Beverley Cottage, Middleton-in-Teesdale, averaging £500 per head for a run of two-month-old Limousin calves, topping at £545 purchased by Mr D Holgate. The same home also achieved £500 for heifers.
A run of six-week-old British Blue cross Fleckvieh bull calves from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, topped at £440 purchased by Messrs B & DA Bousfield, Glaslyn House.
Twenty-nine vendors sold today in comparison to an entry of 64 calves from ten vendors last year, showing a strong demand for this sale with some vendors commenting on how much dearer this sale was compared to others this week.
