Prime Sheep 280721
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3405 prime sheep, comprising of 1723 prime lambs & 1682 cast ewes, rams & prime hoggs.
A larger offering of prime lambs was forward, averaging 242ppk. Topping the sale at 303ppk (£118) was a pen of 39kg Texel X lambs from Messrs Lyle, Staingills, selling to Mr M Bowe.
A lovely run of 32 well-presented Texel X lambs from Messrs W Gribbon & Son, Waterside Farm averaged 287ppk (£114 ahead) for 39kgs.
Heavy Lambs sold to a top of £140 for 54kg Texel X Lambs from Mr J D Johnston, Castle Bank, selling to West Scottish Lamb Ltd. This run of lambs averaged £123 for 48kgs.
Mr M Holmes, Tilery Farm sold 48kgs Suffolk X Mules to £121, bought by Farmers Fresh, with this run of 47.5kgs averaging 250ppk (£119.14).
A blistering hot trade was witnessed in the cast ewe section for all classes, right across the board. Demand is as great as we’ve seen for a long while. All buyers were very keen to purchase with all accounts in action looking for sheep.
The sale topped at £230 ahead for a pair of Texels from Gate Farm selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd another pair of Texels from Greenacres, Aberdeen selling to £222 ahead.
All ewes sold averaged a staggering £110.47 up £15 ahead on the week.
A run of 36 mainly Texel X Mule ewes from Messrs I & C L Richardson, Greenlands, Cockermouth averaged a staggering £139.83!!
A super show of English Mule ewes was forward, with Messrs D G & L M Strong, Sleagill House selling to 21 to average £126.69 peaking at £129.
An unbelievable trade for horned ewes was witnessed with a ring full of 21 Scotch Blackfaced achieving £109 and a pen of 26 realising £105. Mr K Hunt, Braithwaite Shields sold Swaledale ewes to £104 ahead.
