Prime Sheep 140721
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,368 prime sheep, comprising of 1,312 prime lambs, 559 prime hoggs & 2,497 cast ewes & rams.
Another bumper show of prime stock was seen with lambs forward in larger numbers, although many more are required to fulfil the demand of our active ringside of buyers. The overall sale averaged 262ppk, topping at 325ppk for 38kg Texel cross Beltex lambs from Messrs W Gribbon and Co, Waterside Farm, realising £125 purchased by Mr M Bowe. This run of 21 Texel cross lambs averaged a staggering 316ppk/£125 for 39kg.
Another cracking run of 47 Texel cross lambs from Messrs JE and LM Raine and Son, Ravenwood, averaged a fantastic £123.72/284ppk.
Messrs PJ and SE Rogerson, Maisongill, sold their first draw of Beltex lambs to average 284ppk/£120.35 for 42kg.
Heavy lambs sold to a fast trade with Mr J Aiken, Brick House, selling 56kg Charollais tup lambs to £148, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Messrs WCM Todd & Son, Longhurst, sold a run of 42 Texel cross lambs weighing 46kg to average £122.48/266ppk and Messrs DG and LM Strong, Sleagill House, sold a run of 52 Suffolk cross lambs to average £120.94/261ppk for 46kg.
Mule lambs topped at £102 per head for 42kg (243ppk) from Mr GP Taylor, Swathburn, purchased by Mr W Shearer.
A massive show of hoggs was forward for the time of year, with demand being very strong for the festival next week. Mr LAJ England, Devon, sold 52kg Texel cross hoggs to £124 pounds, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
West Farm sold a run of 162 Continental hoggs to average a staggering £99.14/226ppk for 43kg, topping at £108 per head for a pen of 65.
Demand for ewes held for the third week running with exception of plain horned ewes which were less on the week. Texel ewes topped at £188 from Messrs R Pigg and Son, Gaitsgill Hall, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats, this run of ewes averaged £171.33.
Mule ewes most definitely did not see any downturn on the week with Backmuir Livestock selling a ring full of Scotch Mules to £124, purchased by Mr J Tucker. All Mules sold averaged £105.87.
Horned ewes topped at £111 for Swaledales from Mr RJ Bell, Scarrowmanwick, purchased by Mr J Tucker, with the same home selling Bluefaced Leicesters to £137 purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Cast Rams topped at £162 for a pen of three Texels from Messrs EA and W Strong, Ploveriggs, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
