Penrith Prime Sheep 070721

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,088 prime sheep, comprising of 1,145 prime lambs, 224 prime hoggs & 3,719 cast ewes & rams.

Lambs came forward in greater numbers and demand held very strong with an overall average of 252ppk being achieved. Topping at 316ppk (£120) was a pen of 38kg Texel X lambs from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise, selling to Mr M Bowe.

Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm sold a lovely run of 38 Beltex X Texel Lambs to average 286ppk (39kg).

Lightweights still achieving a fast trade with Mr J Perrem, Grasmere selling 31kg Continental lambs to £80 a head (260ppk). Mule Lambs from Mr G P Taylor, Swathburn, Great Asby achieved £92 ahead for 40kgs (230ppk).

Heavy lambs once again proved very easy to sell with Mr J D Johnston, Castle Bank selling a run of 47.5kg Texel X Mule Lambs to average £124 (261ppk), peaking at £135 ahead for 53kgs selling to Mr J Tucker.

Prime Hoggs are still coming forward with plenty of demand, Greenacres Farm sold a run of 54 Scotch Blackfaced hoggs to average 36.5kgs (212ppk) totalling £77.52.

Heavies from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg achieved an average of £115.62 for Texel X Mule & Scotch Blackfaced 54kgs and peaking at £121 for 57kgs.

A record entry of cast ewes was forward to an extended ringside of 12 active buyers. Topping the sale at £208 went to Greenacres Farm with Texel ewes selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd. A total of 909 Texel ewes forward averaged £124.66.

Loads of new vendors were forward here at Penrith once again taking full advantage of the fast spirited bidding, with Messrs W L Musgrave & Son, Cardew Hill selling smart Beltex ewes to £153 ahead.

A total of 584 Mule Ewes were forward to average £101.04 selling to a top of £123 a head from Messrs J & J K Speeding, Salter Hall Farm selling to Mr A Dawson, with numerous pens £110-£120.

There was no downturn in demand whatsoever right across the board, with cast rams even selling to a much sharper trade topping at £180 ahead from Mr J Aitken, Brick House selling to Mr N Lomax.
