On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,027 prime sheep, comprising of 945 prime lambs, 497 prime hoggs & 1,585 cast ewes & rams.

A larger show of lambs was forward to an extended ringside of buyers. The whole sale achieved an overall average of 261ppk, up 24ppk on the week.
The sale topped at 303ppk twice, firstly for a pen of lovely Texel cross Beltex Lambs, weighing 40kgs from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, realising £121, purchased by Mr M Bowe. Secondly from Messrs Metcalfe, Home Farm for 40kg Texel cross lambs, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

The overall sale averaged £110.46 per head, topping at £160 for cracking Texel lambs weighing 58kgs from Mr A Wilson, Hardrigg Hall purchased by Mr N Lomax. Messrs Wilson, Hardrigg Hall sold a run of superb Texel Lambs to average 284ppk/£126.91. Heavy Lambs took a sharp rise, averaging 201ppk for all sold weighing over 52kgs.

Riverview sold forty-two Cheviot hoggs, weighing 32kg to £67, bought by Yorkshire Halal.

Cast ewes were forward in strong numbers once again, but heavy ewes were in short supply.

Horned and Mule ewes were most definitely considerably dearer, with Backmuir Livestock selling a pen of twenty Mules to £126 a head, purchased by Mr D Kemp. All Mules in the sale averaged £111.07.
