Prime Sheep 230621
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,935 prime sheep, comprising of 700 prime lambs, 322 prime hoggs & 1,913 cast ewes & rams.
Topping the sale today at 286p/kg (£120) was a single 42kg Texel lamb from Messrs JL Potter & Sons, Town Head, purchased by Cranston’s Butchers’ Ltd.
Heavy lambs still sold the easiest, with a sale average of 247p/kg for this section. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm sold a pen of 48kg Texel lambs to £127 (272p/kg) selling to Farmers Fresh Ltd.
Smart lambs carrying flesh were in short supply with buyers going home short of requirements.
Hoggs are still coming in good numbers and demand seems to be holding up remarkably well, with Messrs LM & JH Bowes, Ghyll Bank selling 50kg Continentals to realise £129 (258p/kg), this run averaged £112.73 (249p/kg) for 45kg.
Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg sold a run of 114 Scotch Blackfaced and Continental cross hoggs to average £127.06 (221p/kg) for 57kg. A pen of Texel cross Suffolks from this home achieved £140, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
A monster show of ewes was forward to our complete ringside of buyers, topping at £196 for a pen of three Texel ewes from Greenacres, selling to Mr J Tucker. Demand once again seemed very much unchanged and still many more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage. Texel & Beltex ewes were in short supply with orders not being fulfilled.
More horned ewes were forward with Mr AR Edmondson, Hawkswell Farm, Ulverston, selling eleven Swaledales to £98 a head. Herdwick ewes sold to £91 a head from Mr G Rennie.
Mule ewes still hit a maximum of £123 from Backmuir Livestock, with these being one of the easiest categories to sell. A total of 385 sold to average £106.87.
Cast rams sold to a sharper trade, with Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor, selling a pen of Bluefaced Leicesters to £181 a head, bought by Mr N Lomax.
