On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 48 OTM cattle.
Cast cows and bulls met an enhanced trade once again, maybe the dearest seen in a very long time.
The sale topped at 225.5p/kg (£2128.72) for a fourteen-year-old British Blue X cow from Messrs G & JE Bell, Far Broom, selling to Mr S McGimpsey.
A run of aged, fed Simmental X cows from Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm, averaged £1236.79 (168p/kg), topping at £1304, purchased by Mr Owain Llyr.
Dairy cows took the largest lift on the fortnight, with Messrs R Forrest & Son, Low Rutter, selling Holsteins to £1242.27 (160.5p/kg), selling to Mr L Fell.
Younger Black & White cows sold to a top of 180.5p/kg (£1138.96) from Messrs Fisher, Yanwath Woodhouse. Others closely followed at £1170.34 (179.5p/kg) from Messrs S Allan, Greenhow.
Older Friesian cows, straight out of the parlour achieved 153.5p/kg from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, with many regularly 140p/kg plus.
Cast bulls followed suit, with a bonanza of a trade, a pure Beef Shorthorn from Messrs J & M Wood, High Harberwain achieved £1619.07 (138.5p/kg), selling to Mr D Barker.
Take full advantage of the live ring system at the moment where the demand is as strong as it is, and abattoirs are short of numbers.
