Prime Sheep Report 160621
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,323 prime sheep, comprising of 1,271 prime lambs, 413 prime hoggs & 1,639 cast ewes & rams.
A larger show of lambs was forward to an extended ringside of buyers. The sale topped at £164 a head for a pair of 54kg Texel lambs from Messrs JT & EM Marrs, Broomhills, selling to Mr N Lomax. Well-fed heavy lambs, 45kg and over were the best to sell and if anything, short of our buyers’ requirements. Mr JD Johnson, Castle Bank, Appleby, sold a run of 47kg well-fed Texel X Mule lambs to average £147 (310p/kg).
Another large show of prime hoggs was forward, with demand still being very strong, topping at £146 a head for a ring full of 66kg Texel X Mule hoggs from Messrs J Armstrong, Highrigg. This run of sheep averaged £139.18.
A ring full of twenty-six Suffolk X Mule hoggs weighing 50kg realised £130 a head from Howe Farm. This run of 136 averaged £121.65 (263p/kg).
Another huge show of cast ewes and rams was forward, with an average of £110.91 being achieved, this up £34 on the year.
Texel ewes topped at £200 a head for a pen of seven from Tarn End, purchased by Mr J Tucker.
Mule ewes were most definitely the easiest sold, with an average of £104.90 being achieved, topping at £126 for a pen of seventeen from Backmuir Livestock, selling to Mr D Kemp. This was closely followed at £123 for a pen of fourteen from the same home.
Horned ewes didn’t see any down turn in trade, with Scotch Blackfaces achieving a top of £108 from Mr H Murray, Gretna. Swaledales from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside achieved £100 per head.
A pair of Charollais rams from Holme House Farm achieved £200 per head, and Texels realised £190 from the same home.
Extended orders and buyers ensured all classes held to last week’s strong trade.
