Prime Sheep 260521
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,367 prime sheep, comprising of 396 prime lambs, 659 prime hoggs & 1,312 cast ewes & rams.
A marvellous trade was witnessed for all lambs sold, topping at 420ppk for 41kg Texel cross lambs, realising £171 per head from Messrs ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, with this run of cracking lambs averaging £161.45/375ppk.
The whole sale averaged £140 per head, with demand outstripping supply recently and many more numbers are required across the board for all types and weights, especially ¾ bred lambs.
Suffolk lambs topped at 395ppk for a pen of fourteen, weighing 44kg from Messrs TG & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, totalling £158 per head, with this run averaging £150.
Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Carlisle, sold a run of 33 Charollais lambs to average £149.25, topping at £158 for 47kg.
Hoggs were forward in tighter numbers, but still eagerly bid-for with heavy hoggs definitely in short supply. The sale topped at £179 for a pair of 59kg Texel cross hoggs from Messrs JG & RW Nevinson, High House Farm, purchased by Mr N Lomax, this run of well-fed hoggs averaged £160.
Topping per kilo went to Messrs JT & EM Marrs & Son, Broomhills, for a pen of 47kg Beltex hoggs achieving 332ppk/£156.
A good run of 168 commercial and Scotch Blackface hoggs from Messrs JC Robinson, Black Leases, averaged £134.17/299ppk for 44.5kg.
A complete bonanza from start to finish was witnessed for cast ewes and rams with a sale average of £120.78 being achieved, this up £15.60 on the week.
A total of ten Texel ewes sold in excess of £200 per head, topping at £228 for a pen from Tarn End, purchased by Mr J Tucker, a total of 189 Texel ewes averaged £143.46.
Heavy fat ewes sold to a much sharper trade with Messrs JT & J James, Mid Toddhills, selling Bluefaced Leicesters to £151 and Messrs JJ Henderson & Son, Park House, achieving £126 for Mules, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
Several pens of horned ewes sold in excess of £100 with Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, achieving £105 per head for Swaledales.
