On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 120 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Another marvellous show of both calves and stirks was forward with demand for young calves, especially native breeds, being very strong.
The sale topped at £780 for a twelve-month-old Limousin bullock from Mrs S Armstrong & Sons, Moorriggs, purchased by IM Cook, North Allerton. A ten-month-old British Blue bull stirk achieved £770 from Messrs DW Cannon & Son, Low Abbey.
Heifers sold to £760 for ten-month-old British Blue cross stirks from first-time-vendor Mr M Stephenson, Winter Tarn, purchased by Mr J Shields.
Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm, sold 4 eight-month-old British Blue bullocks, ideal grass cattle, to realise £700 per head, purchased by Mr WH Raine, Renwick.
First-time customers Messrs M & JA Johnston, Petteril Side, sold well-reared, young Holstein stirks to £295, purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Young calves were forward in greater numbers and very good to sell, with eight-week-old British Blue bulls achieving £420 from Messrs B & GC Donald, The Ling, purchased by Mr M Forbes.
Dolphenby Farming Partners sold New Zealand cross Hereford heifers to top at £250 with numerous calves in excess of £200.
