On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,304 prime sheep, comprising of 107 prime lambs, 1,090 prime hoggs & 2,107 cast ewes & rams.

An increased number of lambs was forward again, topping at £171 for 46kg Continental cross lambs from Messrs ES & D Noble, Mill Farm, purchased by Cranstons Quality Butchers.

Texel cross Suffolk lambs from Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm, achieved £166 for 42kg (395ppk), with this run averaging £150.20/378ppk. Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, sold 38kg lambs to £151/397ppk.

Prime hoggs averaged 305ppk, this up 20ppk on the week with both numbers and meat in short supply. Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, sold 40kg Beltex hoggs to £148/350ppk, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, this run averaged 338ppk.

A run of 113 well-fed commercial hoggs from Messrs JC Robinson, Black Leases, averaged £142.71/312ppk for 45kg.

The sale averaged £138.34 per head overall, topping at £174 for a pen of Suffolk hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Farmers Fresh Ltd.

More hoggs are required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand from our ringside of buyers.

A huge offering of cast ewes was forward and even more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage. The sale topped at £216 twice, firstly from Holme House and secondly from Mr L Skelton, Low House Farm, purchased by Mr J Tucker, this run of ewes averaged a staggering £165.17.

A total of 24 ewes and rams sold in excess of £200 per head, with Messrs RC Mitchell, Mirkbooths, selling Texel cross rams to £212, purchased Mr N Lomax.

The whole sale averaged £123.70 per head, with a total of 384 Suffolk cross ewes averaging £139.83, topping at £172, closely followed at £170 for a ring full of pure-breds.

Horned ewes were in very short supply with numerous pens in excess of £100 per head, topping at £117 for a pen of ten Scotch Blackfaces from Holme House. Swaledales achieved £108 from Messrs Moore, Softley Farm, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
