Prime Sheep 140421
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,309 prime sheep, comprising of 3 prime lambs, 1,116 prime hoggs & 1,190 cast ewes & rams.
Spring lambs were good to sell once again, with Messrs C Bousfield & Sons, Holme Farm, selling a pair of 39kg Texel cross lambs to £153/392ppk, purchased by Cocklakes Farm Shop, Penruddock.
A plainer offering of hoggs was forward with meat in short supply, although an SQQ average of 313ppk was still achieved.
The sale topped at 415ppk for a pen of Beltex hoggs realising £170 from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, purchased by Cranstons Quality Butchers. This home also sold a ring full of 42kg hoggs to £171, with their whole run averaging £156.48/366ppk.
Messrs EA & N Thompson, Bromley Green, sold a lovely run of Texel cross hoggs to average a staggering £148.55/371ppk.
An overall sale average of £135 per head was achieved with Messrs JL Potter, Long Marton, selling 54kg Texel hoggs to £170 purchased by West Scottish Lamb.
Plenty of heavy hoggs achieved in excess of £150 per head with Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot selling a run of 151 well-finished Texel cross hoggs to average £150.70 for 48kg.
Hill hoggs achieved some extreme returns with Mr D Baldry, Howtown, selling twenty Swaledale hoggs, weighing 42kg, to £126/300ppk. Herdwick hoggs from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, achieved £136 for 42kg/324ppk. Lightweight Cheviot hoggs achieved £100/313ppk for 32kg from Messrs Iredale, Greenbank.
There was no change in the cast ewe trade, with demand equally as strong as last week.
A sale average of £130.55 was achieved for all sold, with cast rams averaging £141.68. The sale topped at £223 per head for a pen of five Texel ewes from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, this run averaged a staggering £186.25, with several other pens in excess of £200. A total of 360 sold in excess of £150 per head.
Suffolks sold exceptionally well, with 325 ewes averaging £143.77, topping at £178 from Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, this home also sold a pen of five for £174 per head.
Mule ewes topped at £139 per head from Messrs DW Cannon, Low Abbey, and all sold averaged £109.77. Swaledale ewes topped at £108 from Messrs Little, Bank End Mill.
Cast rams topped at £186 for a pair of Suffolks from Holme House, closely followed at £170 for a pen of nine Texels from the same home.
