Prime Sheep 070421

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,893 prime sheep, comprising of 2 prime lambs, 1,553 prime hoggs & 1,338 cast ewes & rams.

The first offering of spring lambs was forward, topping at £160/356ppk for 45kg Suffolk cross Texel lambs from Mr P Lowthian, Culgaith, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.

Record prices were seen today with an SQQ average of 336ppk and an overall price per head of £141.31 being achieved, over seventeen pens of hoggs realised in excess of 400ppk. The sale topped at £185/440ppk for a pen of 42kg Beltex cross Texel hoggs from Messrs M Bindloss & Sons, Shap Abbey, purchased by Mr M Bowe. This run of 45kg hoggs averaged a staggering 376ppk/£171.

Messrs W Gribbon & Son, Waterside Farm, sold a run of 23 Beltex cross Texel hoggs to average £165.07/392ppk.

Heavy hoggs achieved some unbelievable returns, topping at £183 for 47kg hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, purchased by Field Fresh Ltd.

Messrs TD Hewetson, Scales Hall, achieved £170 for Suffolk cross Texel hoggs and £164 for 64kg Suffolk cross Mule hoggs, with this run of 62kg Commercial hoggs averaging £161.18.

Cheviot hoggs, weighing 45kg, from Messrs JC Robinson, Black Leases, achieved £143/318ppk purchased by Mr W Shearer. A pen of 17 Swaledale hoggs achieved 293ppk for 41kg, realising £120 from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Shetland cross Texel and Cheviot hoggs from Riverview Farming achieved £110 for 36kg, purchased by Mr N Lomax.

We had possibly one of the dearest trades ever seen for cast ewes and rams, with an overall average of £127.37 being achieved, up £22 per head on the week. The sale topped at £215 for a pen of 3 Texel ewes from Holme House, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. A total of 245 Texel ewes averaged £150.27.

Numerous pens of ewes achieved in excess of £200 per head, with strong Texel ewes in short supply.

Heavy, fat ewes were exceptionally good to sell with plenty of Suffolk cross Mules achieving £155-£165 per head. Suffolk ewes from Mr A Bell, Thethwaite Farm, achieved £166. Tarn End sold Mule ewes to £136. A total of 257 Suffolk ewes averaged £147.56.
Swaledale ewe returns were unbelievable, with Mr JF Edgar, Castle Nook selling 179 horned ewes to average £93.42, topping at £106 for a pen of seventeen and a ring full of sixty-nine fell ewes achieving £90.

Texel rams achieved £174 from Messrs WE Strong & Partners, Midtown, purchased by Mr N Lomax, Bluefaced Leicester rams from the same home realised £170.
