Rearing Calves & Stirks 020421
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 141 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Another massive show of calves and stirks was forward to a very strong ringside of buyers ensuring all classes were considerably dearer on the fortnight, with some prices being completely mind-blowing. Several vendors achieved a rise in returns of £50-£80 per head, particularly for 4-5-month-old stirks.
Vendors travelled from as far away as West Auckland, with Broom Mill Farm showing a run of twenty 5-8-month-old Aberdeen Angus bull & heifer stirks, out of Dairy Shorthorn cows, to average £625, topping at £730 for a pen of six bulls purchased by Mr J Little.
Closely followed at £710 for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks from Messrs JH & E Ivinson, Plumpton Foot, purchased by Mr J Linsley.
Five-month-old British Blue bull stirks achieved £615 & £600 from Skirwith Abbey, with this run of 10 Limousin & British Blue bulls and heifers averaging £541.50.
A run of Limousin heifers, 4-5-month-old, out of British Friesian cows averaged £538.33 from Mr DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, topping at £545 purchased by Mr M Forbes.
Young calves were once again in short supply for all classes, with Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, selling 10-week-old British Blue bulls to £490. Dolphenby Farm sold a run of New Zealand Friesian calves topping at £168.
