Prime Sheep 310321
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,790 prime sheep, comprising of 1,393 prime hoggs & 1,397 cast ewes & rams.
A smaller and lesser quality show of prime hoggs was forward, yet all classes were most certainly dearer on the week, with the sale averaging 295p/kg SQQ (£125.93).
The sale topped at 414p/kg (£174) for a pen of Beltex X Texel hoggs from Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park, selling to Yorkshire Halal. This run of twenty-two hoggs averaged £152.82 (357p/kg).
Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck sold a run of fifty-one Beltex X & Cheviot X hoggs to average £146.63 (338p/kg).
Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey sold a run of twenty-eight Beltex hoggs to average £151.14 (336p/kg) for 45kg.
Mr TH Harrison, Sleddale Hall had a run of twenty-eight Beltex X hoggs to average £147.71 (342p/kg).
A run of 121 Texel X Beltex & Texel X Mule hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, averaged a staggering £144.93 (309p/kg) for 46.5kg, with 50kg hoggs from this home achieving £163 per head.
Messrs TE Irving, East Cliff sold a run of sixty-eight Texel X Mule & Suffolk X Mule hoggs to average £143.20 (260p/kg) for 55kg.
Horned hoggs sold to a top of 281p/kg, totalling £118 for a pen of twenty 42kg Swaledales from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House.

A good offering of cast ewes and rams was forward to our complete ringside of buyers, with an overall average of £105.01 being achieved, this up once again on the week.
The sale topped at £200 a head for Continental ewes from Holme House, selling to Pak Mecca Meats. Mule ewes and horned ewes were extremely well bid for throughout, topping at £119 for nineteen Mule ewes from Backmuir Livestock. Swaledales peaked at £92 for a pen of twenty from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside, selling to Mr N Lomax, with all Swaledales averaging £75.26. This section was well short of buyer’s requirements.
A special mention must go to Messrs C & P MacDonald, White Dyke, for their run of Welsh ewes, averaging £87.32 and topping at £90 for a pen of nine.
Cast rams definitely made the dearest trade for a long time, with seven Charollais rams achieved £166 per head, selling to Yorkshire Halal. A ring full of Dorset rams from Devon achieved £152, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Vendors took advantage from literally all four corners of the UK, coming from Northern Ireland, and as far as Devon, North Aberdeen and Inverness.
