Prime Sheep Report 170321
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,943 prime sheep, comprising of 1,487 prime hoggs & 1,456 cast ewes & rams.
A smaller show of prime hoggs was forward to a complete ringside of buyers. An SQQ average of 305p/kg was achieved, with an overall average of £132.47 for all types.
Topping the sale at 426p/kg (£172) was a pen of 43kg Texel hoggs from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, selling to Mr M Bowe. This run of hoggs averaged £150.02 (352p/kg).
Top price per head on the day was £176 (410p/kg), this was paid for a pen of 43kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside. This run of hoggs averaged £155.63 (359p/kg).
A run of heavy Texel X hoggs from Messrs W & SE Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall averaged a staggering £158.57 (300p/kg) for 52kg, topping at £167.00.
Horned hoggs sold to a top of £124 for a pen of 49kg Swaledales from Messrs HM & R Ivinson & Sons, Hole House. This was closely followed at £117 for a pen of 43kg Swaledales, from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Another large show of cast ewes and rams sold to an average of £102.27 for all sold. Topping at £190 for a Texel ewe from Mrs S Armstrong & Sons, Moorriggs, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Suffolk ewes sold exceptionally well with over three hundred in the sale averaging £122.51, topping at £167 for a pen from Holme House, and pure-breds selling to £164 for a pen of five, selling to Lancashire Direct.
Mule ewes sold to extra orders, with this breed topping at £126 for a pen of fourteen from WR Wilson, South View, purchased by J Tucker. Mules averaged £105.91.
All classes of both prime hoggs and cast ewes were short of buyers’ requirements, and more numbers are required for next week’s sale.
