Rearing Calves & Stirks 050321
On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 165 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A record number of calves and stirks was forward, ranging from 2 weeks to 7 months in age. Demand is out-growing the numbers forward and many more are required on a fortnightly basis, with seven dealers and over thirty farming customers very keen to purchase.
The sale topped at £585 for a five-month-old Limousin bull stirk from Skirwith Abbey, with heifers topping at £570 for a pair of Limousins from The Meadows, all purchased by Mr A Mcbride.
Younger calves were exceptionally good to sell with Messrs JH & JE Taylor, The Harras selling ten-week-old Limousin bull calves to £510 and a twelve-week-old Holstein heifer to a staggering £325. Fleckvieh calves, 3-4-weeks-old achieved £200 per head for a pen of three from Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall and Messrs JD & F Wharton, Town Head Farm, sold four-week-old Black & White calves to £190.
Young heifer calves topped at £500 for twelve-week-old British Blues from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, this run averaged a staggering £485.
Several customers have reverted back to selling live here in Penrith, benefitting them highly with the returns achieved. Definitely consider selling here in a fortnights time with buyer interest already high and a batch of sixteen 5-6-month-old Aberdeen Angus stirks entered already.
