Prime Sheep 030321
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,466 prime sheep, comprising of 2,022 prime hoggs & 1,424 cast ewes & rams.
A larger show of prime hoggs was forward to an extended ringside of buyers with an SQQ average of 297ppk being achieved, topping at 388ppk from Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside with a pen of 42kg Beltex X Texel Hoggs realising £165 ahead selling to Mr M Bowe. This run of 55 averaged a staggering 338ppkg for 42kgs, realising £143.71.
Messrs A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall sold a run of 47 Texel X Beltex Hoggs to average £342ppk/£137.47 for 40kg.
Messrs F J & E M Mason and Son, Sickergill sold a run of 77 Texel hoggs to average 39kgs achieving £128.62/330ppk.
Topping the sale at £171 a head was a pair of 47kgs Texel hoggs from Mr J Walker, 3 Gables, selling to Mr M Bowe. This run of hoggs averaged 323ppk/£138.50.
An overall sale average of £126 was achieved with heavy hoggs regularly £140-£148 ahead, with Messrs W & S E Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall selling a run of 51.5kg hoggs averaging £143.70/279ppk. Messrs T E Irving & Sons, East Cliff sold a run of 55 Texel X Mule & Suffolk X Mules to average £139.71 (261p/kg), topping at £149 for 60kg Texel X Mules selling to Mr R Skelton.
Lightweights were in short supply with Messrs Iredale, Greenbank selling 35kg Cheviots to £103 ahead selling to Mr N Lomax (294ppk)
Hill Bred Sheep sold exceptionally well with Swaledales from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House achieving £123 ahead and £119 for 45kgs. Swaledale wethers weighing 44kg from Mr D Baldry, Howtown sold to £117 ahead (266ppk)
Mules topped at £140 ahead from Messrs H M Ivinson, Hole House and averaged £129.70 for a run of 108 at 55kgs.
A run of 40 Texel X Shetlands from Greenacres achieved an average of £281ppk/£88.43 for 31.5kgs.
Cast Ewes and Rams met a bouncing trade with several lots over £200 and topping at £208 for Texels from Backmuir Livestock selling to Mr J Tucker. The whole sale averaged £97.35.
Messrs R Pigg & Sons, Gaitsgill Hall sold Pure Texel ewes to £202 and averaged £169 ahead for a run of 10.
Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge sold a run of 44 Beltex Ewes to top at £169 and averaged £131.75.
English Mules regularly £100 plus topping at £112 from Backmuir and Horned Ewes achieved £100 ahead for Jacobs and Herdwicks managed to reach an unbelievable £85.
