On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 106 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
A larger show of calves and stirks was forward with several new vendors showing from as far away as Dumfries and Bishop Auckland, demand was certainly strong with sellers highly delighted with the trade.
The sale topped at £660 for a six-month-old British Blue bull stirk from Mr DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, purchased by Mr A Maw.
First-time vendors Messrs Mallinson, Hall Field sold a run of five British Blue bull stirks, 4–5 month-old, to average a staggering £615. (Pictured below)
Ten-month-old Aberdeen Angus bullocks topped at £650 from Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm, purchased by Mr J Shields.
Younger bull calves topped at £455 twice for eight-week-old British Blues from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, purchased by Mr M Forbes. Limousin cross Shorthorn calves, also eight-weeks-old, achieved £400 from Mrs S Armstrong & Sons, Moorriggs, purchased by Mr P Bousfield.
A run of four nine-week-old Holstein calves from Brackenburgh Home Farm averaged £112.50, topping at £125. Dairy Shorthorns from Messrs S Armstrong & Sons, Moorriggs, achieved £160-£200 for four-week-old calves.
The heifer section topped at £600 for Aberdeen Angus stirks from Mr C Taylor, Eden Lodge Farm. Young heifers were sharp to sell once again with four-week-old Aberdeen Angus calves achieving £240 from Messrs B & GC Donald, The Ling, this home also sold British Blue heifers to £280.
Over 40 buyers were present, many going home empty handed. Please take advantage of the sale, we have several new vendors lined up for the next sale already.
