On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3782 prime sheep, comprising of 2211 prime hoggs & 1571 cast ewes & rams.
A marvellous trade was witnessed with export Hoggs and lightweights being in extreme demand. An SQQ average of 276ppk being achieved, up again on the week.
The sale topped at 363ppk for a pen of superb, well-finished Beltex X Texel hoggs from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, with a pen of 41kg’s achieving £149 a head, selling to Mr M Bowe. This run of 43kg hoggs averaged 300ppk/£130.
Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside sold a run of 30 Beltex X Texel hoggs to average a staggering 326ppk/£143.15. They topped the sale at £153 a head/347ppk for 44kg’s, selling to Mr M Bowe.
An overall per head sale average of £117.02 was achieved. Heavy hoggs saw a good lift, especially for 49-51kg’s, with Mr P Bousfield, Glaslyn House selling a run of 46 Texel hoggs to average 49kg’s - £131.11/268ppk.
56 Suffolk X and Texel X Mule hoggs, from Messrs Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold to an average of £132.13/249ppk for 53kg’s.
A fantastic load of Swaledale hoggs from Elliott Bros, Harbour Flatt averaged £109.22 for 42-45kg’s (254ppk), topping at £116 a head for 45kg’s (257ppk).
Commercial hoggs met some rare trades with Messrs JC Robinson, Black Leases selling 120 Texel x mules to average 42kg’s, £118.94/281ppk.
Cast ewes and rams met very similar returns, with the sale topping at £189 for Texel ewes from Mr CW Donald, Lamonby House, selling to Mr J Tucker.
Horned ewes were definitely the dearest trade of the day, with these topping at £74 from Messrs HM & R Ivinson, Hole House, selling to Mr J Tucker.
