On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 104 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
The snow definitely didn’t cool down the trade, this was the dearest sale we’ve held so far with all classes being competitively bid for.
The sale topped at an unbelievable £680 for a five-month-old British Blue bull stirk from Mr DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, Dacre, purchased by Mr J Horn. British Friesian stirks, from the same home, achieved £355 purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Young calves achieved the largest lift, especially Black & Whites, with Messrs Turnbull, Monks House, selling ten-week-old British Blue bulls to £435, purchased by Mr K Hunt.
Messrs AD & FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall, sold five-week-old British Blue calves to £400 and Messrs JD & F Wharton, Town Head Farm, sold three-week-old British Friesian bull calves to a staggering £130 & £120.
A run of eight to ten-week old Black & White and Danish Red calves shocked vendors Brackenburgh Home Farm as this consignment achieved double what they had been making on a collection centre basis, averaging £163.33 and topping at £275.
