On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 112 Rearing Calves and Stirks.
Our calf and stirk sale continues to strengthen each fortnight, with over forty buyers around the ringside and several new vendors taking advantage of demand.
The sale opened with a fantastic run of well-reared Simmental stirks out of Friesian cows from Messrs G & EA Harrison, Mount Clifton, topping the sale at £630 for a bullock purchased by Mr J Horn, Lazonby, with other six-month-old stirks regularly selling in excess of £550 from the same home.
Messrs Walsh, Bunkers Hill, sold a run of four-month-old British Friesian stirks to average a staggering £277, topping at £310, purchased by Messrs Musgrave, Hartlepool.
A run of five Limousin calves, eight-weeks-old, averaged £335 from Thackwood Farms, majority being heifers out of Holstein cows.
Mr KJ Burne, High Barn, achieved an unbelievable trade for a run of eight to ten-week-old Limousin and British Blue calves, averaging £349 for mainly heifers.
Young Black & White calves from Messrs JH Capstick, Lockholme Hall, sold to a top of £270, purchased by Mr D Holgate.
Limousin cross British Friesian bull calves, four-weeks-old, from Messrs JD & F Wharton, Town Head Farm, Tebay, sold to £380 & £350 purchased by Mr P Bousfield.
We are seeing a very strong demand for five to ten-month old stirks with many customers going home empty-handed, quality Limousin and British Blue young calves are also in short supply and could be sold to premium prices.
