On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 5,274 prime sheep, comprising 3,440 prime lambs & 1,837 cast ewes & rams.

cracking show of lambs were forward with an SQQ average of 232ppk being achieved (218ppk overall). The sale topped at 298ppk, from first time customers Messrs EM Smith & Sons, Towiemore Farm, Aberdeenshire, with a pen of 41kg Beltex lambs achieving £122, selling to Mr R Skelton. The same home also had a pen of 43kg’s selling to £123.

Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park hit a bonanza of a trade with 43 Texel X lambs averaging 39kg’s, 283ppk/£111.72.

Messrs RG Todd, Crosby Hall sold a run of light weight Beltex X lambs to average 39kg’s, £107.80/276ppk.

The whole sale averaged a staggering £99.71 per head, with Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park selling 43kg Texel X lambs to £124 a head/288ppk purchased by Mr M Bowe. The same weight for tup lambs also achieved £124, selling to West Scottish Lamb Ltd.

Messrs AM & PM Bowman, Crindledyke sold a run of 100 Suffolk X Mule lambs to average £104 for 51kg’s, with a ringfull of 54kg’s achieving £109, selling to Mr N Lomax.

Mr S Robinson, Thrang Cragg smashed the Mule prices once again with a ring full of 45kg’s achieving £95 ahead/211ppk, selling to Mr R Vivers.

Heavy Mules from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House achieved £104 a head for 56kg’s selling to Farmers Fresh Wales.

The light weight lambs were electrifying with Messrs Iredale, Greenbank Farm selling a pen of 26 Cheviots weighing 34kg’s selling to Mr W Shearer for £83 a head (244ppk).

Swaledale lambs from Messrs GD &JD Nelson, Hedwynds sold to £87 a head for 43kg’s, purchased by Mr A Dawson.

An unbelievable ewe trade was witnessed with demand being extremely strong. Many more ewes are required!

The sale topped at £180 a head on two occasions. Firstly, from T&J Airey, New Grange Farm selling to Pak Mecca Meats, with this run of 30 ewes averaging £143.27. Secondly, from Messrs A & MJ Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, selling to Mr J Tucker.

Mr G Pyman, Park View sold a run of his usual well bred, quality ewes to average a staggering £160.40.

Plenty of pens of mule ewes sold well into the late £80’s and topping at £99 a head from Messrs Lord, Hewgill House, selling to Mr R Skelton. A ring full of 28 from Backmuir Livestock sold to £95 a head selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd.

Some outstanding runs of Scotch Blackface ewes were forward, with a pen of 18 selling to £84 a head from River View, purchased by Mr A Dawson.
