Prime Sheep Report 021220
On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,807 prime sheep, comprising 2,966 prime lambs & 1,841 cast ewes & rams.
Another massive show of prime lambs were forward. All classes were dearer on the week with a SQQ average of 226ppk or 215ppk all through. Topping the sale at 300ppk went to Mr N Gill, Stonethwaite with a pen of 34kg Beltex lambs totalling £102 ahead, selling to Yorkshire Halal.
A run of handy weight quality lambs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall averaged £111.23 for 41.5kg’s (266ppk).
An overall sale average per head of £98.39 was achieved with Mr JH Slack, Brougham Castle selling 62kg’s to £122 to Farmers Fresh Wales.
Messrs JJ Henderson & Son, Park House sold a run of 80 Texel X Mule lambs to average a staggering £112.25 for 55kg’s, topping at £119 for 58kg’s selling to Mr N Lomax.
Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe sold a run of 52.5kg well presented heavy lambs to average £114/217ppk.
A ring full of inside fed Mule lambs from Mr S Robinson, Thrang Cragg sold to £98 for 46kg’s (209ppk) selling to Mr R Skelton.
Ewes were forward in greater numbers and demand was most certainly stronger. With a total of 278 selling in excess of £100 a head. Topping at £195 for Texel X ewes from Mr T Mackenzie, Drumreach selling to Mr J Tucker. Pure Texel ewes were in short supply with many more required to fulfil demand.
Heavy Suffolk e wes sold to £130 ahead from Backmuir Livestock selling to Mr N Lomax. Mule ewes sold to a top of £98 a head for a ring full from Messrs J & W Bell, Galleywreay Farm selling to Pak Mecca Meats Ltd.
Horned ewes from start to finish sold exceptionally well with AJ Shaw, Inverness selling 5 Scotch Blackfaced to £81 to Mr J Blenkhorn. Herdwicks from Mr L Skelton, Low House sold to £59 a head and Swaledales from Messrs D & AM Bayles, Barnard Castle sold to £62 a head to Mr A Dawson.
