On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,117 prime sheep, comprising of 196 prime lambs, 710 prime hoggs & 1,211 cast ewes & rams.
A larger show of spring lambs was forward, topping at £171 (363ppk) for Suffolk cross Texel lambs from Mr CB Abernathy, Belvedene, purchased by West Scottish Lamb. This was closely followed at £160 for 45kg lambs from Messrs WE Strong & Partners, Midtown Farm, also purchased by West Scottish Lamb.
A very plain show of hoggs was forward, with meat in very short supply. The sale topped at 321ppk for a ring full of 43kg Texel hoggs from Messrs WR & FD Siddle, Honeypot, realising £138, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, this run averaged £144.59 for 48kg.
Messes JL Potter & Sons, Town Head, sold a run of 70 well-fed commercial hoggs to average £143.04/300ppk for 47kg. Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park sold 54kg Continental hoggs to £156, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
Cast ewes and rams were slightly easier on the week, however Continental ewes still achieved a very sharp trade. This section topped at £190 for Charollais ewes, averaging £139 for all sold.
Horned ewes sold to £116 from Messrs JG & E Lawson & Son, Hundith House, for a pen of Swaledale, purchased by Mr R Skelton.
