On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,062 prime sheep, comprising of 62 prime lambs, 900 prime hoggs & 1,100 cast ewes & rams.
A larger offering of spring lambs was forward on the week, with demand very strong and an SQQ average of 348ppk being achieved. The sale topped at 430ppk for a pen of four 37kg Texel lambs from Messrs C Bousfield & Sons, Holme Farm, realising £159 per head, purchased by Cranston’s Butchers Ltd, this run of lambs averaged £144.13/392ppk for 36.5kg.
The sale averaged £141.97 overall, topping at £165 for a pair of 43kg Suffolk cross Texel lambs from Messrs J Stalker, Ratten Castle, purchased by Cocklakes Farm Shop, Penruddock.
Prime Hoggs topped at 333ppk for 36kg Continentals from Claremont Properties, Hay Close, totalling £120, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Hoggs averaged £128.46 overall, topping at £169 for 61kg Texel hoggs from Messrs F Savage & Sons, Petteril Green, purchased by Mr J Tucker, this run of hoggs averaged £152.25/291ppk for 52kg.
Heavy hoggs achieved the trade of the day with Messrs WR & SD Siddle, Honeypot, selling 71 Texel cross hoggs to average £145.97/303ppk for 48kg.
Messrs TE Irving & Sons, East Cliff, sold their final draw of the season, showing 54 Texel cross Mule hoggs to average £153.5/291ppk for 52kg.
Cast ewes and rams sold to a much sharper trade with all buyers looking for extra stock, the sale topped at £224 for a pen of three Texel ewes from first-time vendor Mr Lister, Westwinds, Lowca, purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Numerous other pens sold in excess of £200 per head and an overall sale average of £111.85 was achieved, this including a large quantity of horned ewes.
Horned ewes achieved some extreme returns with a ring full of 20 Scotch Blackfaces realising £117 per head, purchased by S & S Meats, with others topping at £124 from Backmuir Livestock and Swaledales topping at £112 for a pen of six from Messrs DE & AM Hodgson, Green Farm, purchased by Mr N Lomax, this home also sold Herdwicks to £110.
A total of 232 ewes and rams sold in excess of £140 with rams averaging £154.29 and topping at £200 for a Suffolk from Mr RJ Benson, Kettleside Farm, purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
