On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their opening sale of 3,083 prime sheep, comprising of 1,931 prime hoggs & 1,152 cast ewes & rams.
An unbelievable trade was witnessed today with an SQQ average of 262ppk being achieved for a large proportion of commercial hoggs.
The sale topped at 346ppk for 39kg Beltex hoggs from Messrs Tweddle, Haltcliffe Bridge, realising £135, purchased by Mr M Bowe.
Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, sold an extremely good run of sixty-one well-fed Beltex cross hoggs to average £122.84/284ppk for 43kg.
Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, sold a run of sixty-one Texel cross hoggs to average a staggering £124.18/82ppk for 44kg.
The sale averaged £111.62 overall, up £16 per head on the year, topping at £138 twice for 66kg Texel hoggs from Messrs JG & RW Nevinson & Son, High House Farm, purchased by Farmers Fresh, this run of hoggs averaged £128/233ppk for 55kg.
Messrs T Armstrong & Sons, Sceugh Dyke, averaged £123.93/239ppk for Suffolk cross Texel hoggs weighing 51.5kg.
Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, sold seventy-nine Texel cross and Mule hoggs to average £123.43/239ppk for 51kg, with a pen of nineteen 55kg Mule hoggs achieving £124, closely followed by a pen of 54kg at £123, purchased by Farmers Fresh.
Horned and hill sheep sold to some outstanding returns with Dale Head Farming Company selling forty-five Swaledale tup hoggs, weighing 44kg, to 223ppk/£98, purchased by Mr R Vivers.
Messrs J Ellwood & Partners sold a pen full of 46kg Mule hoggs to £111/241ppk, purchased by Mr R Vivers.
Messrs Rebanks, Racy Ghyll Farm, sold 41kg Herdwick hoggs to £95/232ppk purchased by Yorkshire Halal.
Messrs Wilson, Street Head, sold a run of forty-three well-fed Scotch Blackface hoggs to average £104.93/244ppk for 43kg, topping at £111 for 45kg.
Messrs Iredale, Greenbank Farm, sold a pen full of 34kg Cheviot hoggs to £89/261ppk, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
All classes of hoggs are required for our sale next week with demand strengthening all the time.
Cast ewes and rams met the dearest trade of the season with an overall average of £93.38 being achieved, up £8 per head on the week.
The sale topped at £199 for a Texel ewe from Mr JA Brownrigg, The Croft, purchased by Mr J Tucker, this run of ewes averaged £153.42.
Mr JJ Crichton, Loughrigg, sold a run of Texel cross ewes to average £179.80, topping at £198 purchased by Pak Mecca Meats. Suffolk ewes, from the same home, achieved £150 purchased by Lancashire Direct.
Messrs T & J Airey, New Grange Farm, sold a run of twenty-eight Texel ewes to average a staggering £151.25, topping at £186 purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
Scotch Mule ewes sold to £111 from Foley Brothers, Capheaton, purchased by Yorkshire Halal. English Mules achieved £110 per head from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm.
Horned ewes achieved some phenomenal prices with numerous pens of Swaledales achieving in excess of £75 and Herdwick ewes topping at £77 from Green Farm, Shap.
Cast rams also seen a large lift, topping at £156 for a Charollais from Messrs LW Taylor, Hill Top, purchased by Mr N Lomax.
