On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,235 prime sheep, comprising 2,303 prime lambs & 932 cast ewes & rams.
A much sharper trade was witnessed across the board today with an SQQ average of 234ppk being achieved, 219ppk overall.
The sale topped at 308ppk for a 37kg Beltex lamb from Messrs Lowis, Galloper Park, realising £114, purchased by Yorkshire Halal. This run of thirty-three Texel cross lambs averaged £107/265ppk for 40kg.
Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, sold a run of forty-seven Texel cross lambs to average a staggering 271ppk/£109.04 for 40kg.
The whole sale averaged £98.08, topping at £118 for 42kg Beltex lambs from Messrs R & JM Ridley, Ranbeck, purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. This run of forty-four lambs averaged £105.18/248ppk.
A run of 138 Texel cross lambs from Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe, averaged £107.38/235ppk, with 53kg lambs realising £113 & £112, purchased by Mr J Blenkhorn.
Light weight lambs achieved some fantastic returns with Mr N Gill, Stonethwaite Farm, selling 34kg Herdwick cross lambs to £78, purchased by Mr A Dawson and pure-bred lambs to 217ppk/£76 for 35kg purchased by Pak Mecca Meats.
A smaller show of cast ewes was forward with all classes achieving recent returns, horned ewes were considerably dearer and a sale average of £81.02 was achieved.
The sale topped at £164 for Texel ewes from Greenacres, purchased by Mr J Tucker. Plenty of Continental and Suffolk ewes realised in excess of £110 per head, with Irish Suffolk ewes topping at £125, purchased by Mr W Jewitt.
Scotch Mule ewes sold to £101 for a pen of twelve from Riverview, purchased by Yorkshire Halal, with all Mules sold averaging £85.34.
Horned ewes achieved some serious demand with Swaledales topping at £75 per head from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, and averaging £57.19 for all sold.
