On Friday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their monthly sale of 117 Dairy Cattle. A record entry of dairy cattle descended on the mart, creating exceptional activity throughout the alleys and pens. This strong turnout generated a vibrant atmosphere and a packed ringside of active buyers, from the first milker to the final bulling heifer. Buyers travelled from across the country and beyond, including Shropshire, Lancashire, and Yorkshire. Most classes saw an increase of approximately £200 per head on the month, with the day’s top price reaching £3,100. This was achieved by Messrs Fisher, Moss Thorns, with a tremendous black heifer boasting an outstanding udder, calved 14 days and already giving 31 litres. She was purchased by Messrs H & E M Hunter & Son, Berrier. Next in line were Messrs R W & J Bell, Nerewater, Wigton, with a pure British Friesian heifer, calved just 12 days and giving 22 litres, achieving £2,900. She sold to local buyers Messrs C M & C S Chappelhow, High Grounds. Leading the averages were J M & J Fisher & Daughters, Holmewrangle, at £2,785, topping at £2,820 for a very sweet and correct Blue Roan Dairy Shorthorn giving over 30 litres. Older cows sold exceptionally well. A consignment of 23 British Friesian cows, selling to average £2274.35 with the majority being 3rd & 4th calvers. 3 cows giving 35-40L achieved £2600. The same home also had a small selection of heifers selling to a top of £2850. A total of 42 bulling heifers were forward and proved a pleasure to sell, with customers well rewarded and returns far exceeding expectations. The section topped at £1,820 for an exceptionally well-made heifer from Mr C Dent, Bridge End, which is sure to mature into a superb young cow. A consignment of 26 ProCross (HF x Mont x SWR) heifers, 12–14 months old, averaged an impressive £1,622.31—several hundred pounds ahead of other centres. Vendors are now travelling from across the North of England and South West Scotland to take advantage of this increasingly popular monthly sale, supported by a growing audience of buyers across all categories of stock. Our next sale will be held on Friday 29th May, entries close noon Friday 22nd May.
