On Tuesday we held our Late Autumn Fair of 1,276 breeding sheep, including the second sale of North of England Mule gimmer lambs, breeding ewes, shearlings & gimmer lambs. This sale also included The Annual “Troutbeck” sale of Swaledale, Bluefaced Leicester, Cheviot, Suffolk & Continental rams. A great end to the breeding sales here at Penrith with plenty of buyers still eager to purchase all classes of lambs, ewes and rams. Females topped at £285 for Texel X Beltex shearlings from GMS Carruthers, Towcett Farm, with this consignment of 30 averaging £242.83. Dry Mule gimmer shearlings topped at £225 for 31 from Mr LG Sibson, Hole House Farm. Full-mouthed Mules achieved £175 for a pen of 27, ran with the Texel tup for seven days, from Mr JD Hornsby, Orton. Strong Mule gimmer runners topped at £152 on 2 occasions. Breeding rams sold with ease, topping at £1,100 for a pure Texel shearling from Messrs N & A Bainbridge, Lane Side, Barnard Castle, with this consignment of 5 pure Texels averaging £950. Ram lambs topped at £850 for a very strong Texel with great carcass from Mr G Pyman, Park View, with the best Suffolk lambs achieving £700 from Mr J Hewson, Burgh Head. Yesterday we held our weekly sale of 3,323 Cast Ewes & Rams. A large entry of over 3000 ewes forward once again, 11 active buyers were in attendance ensuring an overall average of £128.72 was achieved, with several new vendors travelling from across the county to take advantage of the competition of offer here. The sale topped at £318 for pure Texel ewes from Mr M Mcnally, Northern Ireland, selling to weekly purchasers AJ Meats, Birmingham. This was closely followed at £310 with a Texel ewe from Messrs N & A Bainbridge, Lane Side, Barnard Castle, with this home also selling the best Mule ewes to £190. A pen of 31 English Mules from Mr RA Crichton, Rottington Hall, achieved £178, purchased by Romford Halal, Essex. Horned and Hill-bred ewes achieved very similar returns with plenty of orders around the ring. West Brow Farm sold 22 Herdwicks to an astonishing £119, with a ring full of 54 achieving £109 from the same home. Swaledale ewes topped at £108 from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill, with Scotch Blackfaced ewes still comfortably achieving over £100, topping at £114 from Mr S Lawson, Huntly Lodge Farm. Yesterday we held our weekly sale of 2,829 Prime Lambs. A bigger show of prime lambs was forward with trade for meaty, well-fed sheep showing no let up. A whole sale average of 304ppk was achieved, with an SQQ average of 315ppk. Grass fed lambs showed more resistance on the week. The sale topped at 414ppk for Beltex X lambs, weighing 44kg from Mr D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, realising £182. This was closely followed at 391ppk for a pen of 6, weighing 43kg, achieving £168 from Messrs RW & G Dickinson, High Knipe. A top-price-per-head of £192 was achieved for an outstanding Beltex X lamb, weighing 59kg from Mr R Armstrong, Garth House. Messrs T Armstrong & Son, Sceugh Dyke, followed closely at £189 for a pen of 4 Texel X Mules, weighing 63kg. Suffolk lambs sold to 345ppk for a pen of 3, weighing 40kg, realising £138 from EJC Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton. Per-head Suffolk lambs topped at £175 twice, firstly for a pen of 6, weighing 59kg from DG & L Strong, Sleagill House, secondly for a single lamb from Messrs Coulston, Hole House, also weighing 59kg. Mule lambs topped at £151 for a pen of 17, weighing 55kg from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House. Mrs J Marshall, Hermitage, showed a great run of 18 lambs to average £169.83/368ppk for 46kg.
