On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,993 Cast Ewes & Rams. Once again Penrith delivered the returns with just shy of 3000 cast ewes & rams forward, selling to average a hefty £161.48. Topping the sale at £340 was for a pen of seven extreme pure Texels from Mr L McNally, Northern Ireland. A further 18 ewes in the sale sold in excess of £300 and a staggering 528 sheep in the sale sold for over £200. A run of 62 strong Texel X ewes averaged £226.65 from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, this home also topped the Beltex section at £330. The best of Suffolks topped at £250, again from Mr L McNally for five pure ewes, larger pens achieved £236 X 21, £228 X 11, £212 X 21, £199 X 16, £196 X 28 & £195 X 19. The very best Scotch Mules sold to £290 from Mr H McRae, Shethin Farm, with another large pen of 25 from the same home achieving £180. Horned ewes again were a long way short of our buyers’ requirements, topping this section at £137 was a pen of 22 from Mr W Morrison, South Bogbain. A ring full of 23 Swaledales achieved £120 from Messrs Strong, Well House. Messrs Wilson, Street Head sold 10 Herdwicks to £121. Fed pure Shetland ewes topped at £80 per head, and a ring full of 42 achieved £68 from Mr Stuart Barcley, Aberdeenshire, this run of 51 averaged £71.29. Cast rams sold with ease topping at £278 from Messrs TJ and JM Powley, Blands Farm, and a pen of 11 from Holme House achieved £222. A large show of horned rams topped at £148 for Swaledales, and £142 for Herdwicks, with numerous hill-bred rams selling between £130-£140. Our next sale will be held on Wednesday 21st January. However heavy sheep show far stronger resistance. A wholesale average of 314.45ppk or 366sqq equating to £147.67 per head. Topping today’s sale for both price per head and per kilo came for 2 superb Beltex Lambs at 44kg, achieving £196 or 445ppk for M/s W Murray & Son, Prior House this homes run of 34 sold to average £108.26 for 34.
