Yesterday we held our weekly sale of 2,842 prime lambs, trade showed another strong lift with a whole sale average of 323ppk being achieved, 339ppk SQQ and £152.97 per head, up £8 per head on this week last year.
The sale topped at 435ppk for a smart Blue Texel X lamb weighing 40kg from Mr D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie, realising £174 purchased by Mr W Shearer on behalf of Pak Mecca. A top price per head of £208 was achieved for a superb Texel lamb weighing 72kg from Messrs B & DA Bousfield, Glaslyn House.
Suffolk lambs topped per head at £200 for a single 73kg lamb from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene. Topping Suffolks in pence-per-kilo went to Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, with 52kg lambs realising 375ppk/£195.
Mule lambs sold to exceptionally strong rates, topping at £162 for 56kg from Mr WJ Whitfield, Pennine View. The top pence-per-kilo was achieved by a pen of 5, weighing 44kg from Mr CA Cannon, Friarbiggin, realising 320ppk/£141.
Mr JG Morton, Bank Hall, sold Cheviot-Mule lambs to 334ppk for a pen of 15, weighing 45kg, totalling £149.
The top seller consignment average went to Messrs RH & JR Little, Park Nook, Bewcastle, who sold 6 to average £181.67. This was closely followed by Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, selling a run of 29 to average £179.24.
Heavy lambs, 55kg plus, continue to add up to big money with first-time vendor Mr R Brazendale, Brocklebank Farm, selling 24 Suffolk Mule lambs to average £170 for 56kg.
