On Sunday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,516 Prime Lambs. Another huge entry of prime lambs descended on Penrith for our Sunday sale. Once again heavy sheep power on and add up to the biggest returns, a whole sale average of 332p/kg was achieved with an SQQ average of 346p/kg or £154 per head. The sale topped at 444p/kg for a pair of Goats, weighing 32kg, achieving £142 from JM & AM Morland, Starrah. Messrs M Bindloss, Shap Abbey, sold 35kg Beltex lambs to 440p/kg, realising £154. A top price per head of £208 was achieved for a brilliant pen of 15 Texel X Beltex lambs, weighing 59kg (353p/kg) from Messrs Fettes, Aberdeenshire. A total of 35 pens achieved over £200 per head. Suffolk lambs topped at £196 for 61kg from Messrs TH & SC Carr, Millhill Farm. Mr R Brazendale, Brocklebank Farm, sold a pen of 10 Suffolks, weighing 58kg to £189 with Messrs M Bindloss, Shap Abbey, selling a pen of 43kg lambs to £150 (349p/kg). Topping the consignment averages at £192.18 was a run of 40 lambs, averaging 59kg from Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House. Mule lambs topped at £175 for a pen of 13, weighing 58kg from GMS Carruthers, Towcett Farm, this was closely followed by a pen of 25, weighing 57kg, realising £170 from Messrs Lowis, Waterside House. On Sunday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,315 Cast Ewes & Rams. Numbers once again surpassed expectations with all sold averaging £154.42, topping at £345 for a pair of extreme Texel ewes from Mr G Bell, Haas Side Farm, purchased by Romford Halal. This was closely followed at £330 for a pure Texel from AM Connon & Son, Skilmafilly Farm, with this home also selling a run of 40 to average £230.18. Aberdeenshire customers topped the Suffolk ewes at £300 from Mr W Morison, South Bogbain, also purchased by Romford Halal, with larger pens of Suffolks achieving £228 x16, £218 x14, £216 x14, £206 x17. A total of 629 sold in excess of £200 per head, with Rams topping at £258 for a Continental from Mr J Clark, Northern Ireland. Horned ewes sold extremely well, topping at £150 for Scotch Blackfaces, with some great pens of well-fed ewes achieving £131 x37 and £125 x49. Swaledale ewes topped at £126 for a pen of 8 from Messrs Fleming & Wilson, Low Mill, with the best Herdwick ewes realising £122 from West Head, Thirlmere.
