On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 6,107 prime sheep, comprising of 2,578 prime hoggs & 3,529 cast ewes & rams.
2,578 hoggs were forward with a larger offering of weathered sheep. Well fed finished sheep continue to be in sharp demand. A whole sale average of 330ppk or 352sqq ppk or £150 per head. Topping todays sale at 500ppk came on 2 occasions. Firstly, for a single Beltex hogg weighing 41kg achieving £204 per head from Messrs W Gribbon & Co, Waterside Farm, also selling at 500ppk came for a single Beltex weighing 40kg achieving £200 from Mr T Magnay, Galleywreay Farm.
Handy weighted hoggs were in high demand. Messrs Iredale, Greenbank Farm sold a pen of 13 Cheviot hoggs weighing 37kg sold to £147. Messrs Tyson, Easthouse sold a ringfull of 58 pure Herdwick hoggs weighing 40kg to achieve £134 or 335ppk.
Scotch Blackface hoggs sold to 344ppk weighing 41kg achieving 144 from Messrs J Carrick & Sons, Ireshope Plains. Suffolk hoggs sold to £179 for a pen weighing 60kg from Messrs R W & G Dickinson, High Knipe. Hoggs 55kg plus still remain wanted with Messrs A H Ritson, Ireby Hall selling 5 Texels weighing 68kg to £190.
Another mammoth show of 3529 cast ewes and tups forward with all buyers present and keen to purchase. Several records were broken with 24 selling over £300 topping at £374 for 3 superb pure Texels from Kedzlie Farms, Sewborwens, Penrith purchased by A J Meats, Birmingham with this home selling 33 Texels to average £272.57 and the run of Texels, Suffolks and Mules averaging £223.36. Very closely followed at £370 from Mr S J Hastwell, The Buildings with pure Texels again purchased by A J Meats, whos whole sale average was £289.80.
640 Suffolk ewes averaged £202.29 topping at a mighty £350 for a monster of a ewe purchased by Romford Halal, Essex. With larger pens averaging £262 x10, £248 x21, £246 x22, £240 x12, £234 x10, £228 x18, £228 x17, £223 x14, £222 x10, £217 x11, £216 x27.
The best English Mules to £220 from Mr B Taylor, Thwaite Hall and Cheviot Mules to £252 from Messrs Stamper & Son, Harrot Hill Farm and Mr C B Abernethy selling 4 Bluefaced Leicesters to £238.
Horned ewes and Hill Cheviots met a sharper trade as a long way short on numbers for buyers requirements with Mr L Graham, Perthshire achieved £140 for Swales and Messrs Bland, Clea Hall selling 8 Herdwicks to £132.
Cast rams sold with great ease topping at £310 from Harrot Hill Farm with Beltex x Texels purchased by PAK Mecca Meats and a pen of 14 Texel and Charollais rams from Mr M McNally, achieved £282 a head purchased by Mr A Dawson.
