On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,215 Prime Hoggs. With pre-sale predictions not as strong, trade would be stronger than anticipated definitely for heavy sheep. A whole sale average of 305ppk overall or 322sqq equalling to £140.38 per head. Topping the trade came from the Bindloss Family at Shap Abbey who showed a great run of 240 prime hoggs. Top price per head of £189 came for a Beltex weighing 44kg or 430ppk. Top ppk from the same family came for a pen of 4 Beltex’s, weighing 40kg achieving 445ppk or £178 per head, also selling 2 weighing 36kg to £160 or 444ppk. 4 separate lots from different homes sold in excess of 440ppk. Messrs R Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge sold a pen of 5 weighing 41kg to £181 or 441ppk and finally Messrs Hodgson, Woodfoot sold a single Beltex weighing 38kg to £168 or 442ppk. Suffolk hoggs sold to £171 for a pen of 147 weighing 63kg from Mr W R Wilson, South View. Messrs G M S Carruthers, Towcett Farm sold a pen of 8 weighing 58kg equalling to £155. On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,748 Cast Ewes & Rams. Numbers keep coming forward consistently with an overall sale average of £151.98 being achieved. Topping at £335 went to Mr L Mcnally, Northern Ireland with a superb pure-bred ewe selling to Romford Halal. Very closely followed at £330 from Tarn End Farm, with the same home selling one of the best pure bred Beltex to £285 to AJ Meats, Birmingham. A run of 20 Pure Beltex ewes from M/s Dinsdale, High Field averaged £208.28. M/s Jenkinson, Clifton Moor achieved an average of £209.83 for 48. North of England Mule ewes topped at £214 from M/s T N & J Hall, Ainstable Hall selling to Mr A Dawson. There was plenty of strong mules still £170 plus with M/s B & M Elkin & Son, Staffordshire selling 12 achieving £175 and Ainstable Hall selling 11 to £170. Horned ewes sold with great ease topping at £132 for Scotch Blackface, Swaledales to £126 from Mr J H Little, Bank End Mill and M/s W M Hutchinson & Sons, Redgate selling 12 to £124. Cast rams topped at £260 for Charollias from, M/s Wilson, Street Head selling to Yorkshire Halal and pair closely followed at £258 from Thrimby Hall Farm, also a pen of 8 Swaledale Cast Rams from Redgate achieved £140.
