Today we held our fortnightly sale of 168 Rearing Calves and Stirks. Once again, a packed ringside of buyers was in attendance with fresh faces eager to purchase. The sale topped at £1,410 for an 11-month-old Beef Shorthorn bull from Nord Vue Farms, purchased by Mr J Field. Brackenburgh Home Farm sold an 8-month-old Luing bull to £1,110. Mr B Hogg, Cairnbridge Farm, sold British Blue bullocks to £1,170 and British Blue heifers to £1,130. First-time vendors Messrs Hogg, Whitehead Hill Farm, sold a pair of Hereford bullocks to £1,100. We had some great consignments on offer in the calf section, with a flying trade to match. A highlight of the sale was a brilliant run of 21 well-reared, 4-month-old calves from Messrs JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm, selling to average a blistering £864.29, topping at £930 for British Blue heifers purchased by Messrs IS & CA Mounsey, Town Head with a pen of 3 British Blue bulls achieving £910, purchased by Messrs T Norman & Son, High House. Donaldson Dairies sold a great run of 3-month-old British Blue calves to average £633. Holstein calves continue to reap big returns, topping at £460 from J Brown, Barrowfield Farm. Yesterday we held our weekly sale of 2,842 prime lambs, trade showed another strong lift with a whole sale average of 323ppk being achieved, 339ppk SQQ and £152.97 per head, up £8 per head on this week last year. The sale topped at 435ppk for a smart Blue Texel X lamb weighing 40kg from Mr D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie, realising £174 purchased by Mr W Shearer on behalf of Pak Mecca. A top price per head of £208 was achieved for a superb Texel lamb weighing 72kg from Messrs B & DA Bousfield, Glaslyn House. Suffolk lambs topped per head at £200 for a single 73kg lamb from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene. Topping Suffolks in pence-per-kilo went to Messrs M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, with 52kg lambs realising 375ppk/£195. Mule lambs sold to exceptionally strong rates, topping at £162 for 56kg from Mr WJ Whitfield, Pennine View. The top pence-per-kilo was achieved by a pen of 5, weighing 44kg from Mr CA Cannon, Friarbiggin, realising 320ppk/£141. Mr JG Morton, Bank Hall, sold Cheviot-Mule lambs to 334ppk for a pen of 15, weighing 45kg, totalling £149. The top seller consignment average went to Messrs RH & JR Little, Park Nook, Bewcastle, who sold 6 to average £181.67. This was closely followed by Messrs DG & LM Strong, Sleagill House, selling a run of 29 to average £179.24. Heavy lambs, 55kg plus, continue to add up to big money with first-time vendor Mr R Brazendale, Brocklebank Farm, selling 24 Suffolk Mule lambs to average £170 for 56kg. Sheep are in strong demand here, with an active ringside of 10 buyers to ensure all classes are keenly bid for. Yesterday we held our weekly sale of 3,224 Cast Ewes & Rams. Once again numbers came forward to a very ringside of buyers with all classes sharper on the week, especially Mules and Horned ewes. The sale topped at £355 for a pure Texel ewe from Mr CB Abernethy, Belvedene, purchased by Romford Halal. Leading in the averages went to Messrs Clubbs, Old Wall, with a consignment of Texel ewes averaging £259.30, topping at £299 for a pen of 3, also purchased by Romford Halal. Weight and fat ewes were in short supply with Texel X Suffolk ewes achieving a top of £272 and Suffolks topping at £262 for a pair selling to Mr G Lomax, with larger pens to £230 x8, £220 x12, £220 x15, £210 x29, £200 x27, £194 x36. English Mules topped at £190 from first-time vendor Mr R Brazendale, Brocklebank Farm, Wigton. Mr B Duffton, sold a pen of 8 Scotch Mules to £188, with larger pens to £179 x8, £172 x18. A pen of 19 pure Easycare ewes from Messrs Atkinson, Scratchmere Scar, achieved a mind boggling £164. Horned ewes were again a long way short of requirements, topping at £134 for a pen of 9 Scotch Blackfaces, with larger pens achieving £128 x9, £124 x32 and pens of West Coast Blackies to £114 x36, £110 x34, with all sold averaging £103.28. Swaledale ewes saw the average peak at its highest point in a long time at £97.33, topping at £116 for a pen of 3 from Messrs V & R Edmondson, Manesty. This was closely followed at £115 on two occasions, firstly from Messrs Mounsey, Throstle Hall, and then for a pen of 22 from Messrs Strong, Well House, with plenty of pens consistently £100 per head plus. Penrith on a weekly basis require these sorts of numbers to satisfy the competition around the ringside.
